Abstract

The Paradoxes of Modernity examines one of the central dilemmas of the modern world: How do we believe in ideas that we know to be untrue, but are of practical value? The modern world tells us to be critical and independent. And yet it also proliferates constructed ideas, from gods to ethical ideals to fictions. Using research from anthropology, psychology, religion, and philosophy, the book shows how the path to belief goes through narratives, communities, and rituals. These technologies help us realize belief in an age of unbelief, but they also call into question the central dogmas of modernity itself: the independent, critical, and rational subject. To be modern is to be caught between these two paradoxes: either incapable of believing in ideas we desire, or realizing them at the expense of modernity itself.

Abstract

Abstract

This work examines the rise of postmodernism in management scholarship and argues that the prevalence of postmodernist thought reflects a lack of understanding by management researchers of the core principles upon which Western business endeavour is based. The author highlights postmodernism’s methodological and conceptual failings, such as disbelief in material progress and economic advancement, and its denial of generalizable laws to direct management research. In its place, the author proposes a return to traditional modernist principles in management research, based on scientific evidence. This ground breaking, timely work will spark debate and challenge previously accepted claims of postmodernism, a nice retort to the anti-business/anti-capitalist literature now prevalent in academia.

Abstract

The main themes and aims of this book are understanding aesthetics, contemporary art and the end of the avant-garde not from the traditional viewpoint of the metaphysics of the beautiful and the sublime but rather thru close connection to the techno-genesis of virtual worlds. This book tackles problems in contemporary art theory such as the body in space and time of digital technologies, along with other issues in visual studies and image science. Further intentions exhibit the fundamental reasons for the disappearance of the picture in the era of virtual reality starting from the notion of contemporary art as realized iconoclasm; art has no world for its "image". The author argues that the iconoclasm of contemporary art has severe consequences. This text appeals to philosophers of art and those interested in contemporary art theory.

Abstract

This book looks at eight post Arab Spring novels in the context of Gilles Deleuze's and Félix Guattari's theory of minor literature. Ahdaf Soueif, Hisham Matar, Karim Alrawi, Youssef Rakha, Yasmine El Rashidi, Omar Rober Hamilton, Saleem Haddad, and Nada Awar Jarrar all focus on the Arab world in their work; on the lives of ordinary and minority peoples; and on the revolutions of their respective nations. This volume shows how these contemporary Anglo-Arab novelists exhibit linguistic experimentation akin to Deleuze's and Guattari's theory of 'deterritorialization', but in a way that is unique to Anglo-Arab writing. The selected novelists repudiate the use of metamorphosis, which is usually an essential part of the deterritorialization of a major language. Instead, their writings enact the minor practice of linguistic deterritorialization by using metaphor and by incorporating contemporary modes of protest like popular slogans, tweets, and chants. These authors challenge the conventions of minor literature and, by adopting this mode of deterritorialization, foreground the experiences of officially silenced voices. Abida Younas is a postgraduate tutor at the University of Glasgow, UK. She has contributed to a number of journals, including "Magical Realism and Metafiction in Post-Arab Spring Literature: Narratives of Discontent or Celebration?" for the British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies (2018).
